When you listen to a music what are you thinking at that time? A memory, a scene from a film, someone or just nothing. We generally love giving some meanings to things like music because we love thinking, and music is a great way to think about something. However, Leonard Bernstein explains "What does music mean?" perfectly in Young People's Concerts.
Leonard Bernstein says music is just music. Even if a film scene came to your mind while you are listening to music, the flm scene is just a addition that helps you to imagine in your mind. Music does not suppose to make you feel something or make you dream about something. It is just made up of notes and sounds good.
Maybe there is same situation in art too. When we go to the museums and while looking at paintings. We are trying to connect things in our mind with the objects in paintings.(Especially in abstract painting it is harder to figure out the objects.) But maybe we do not need to understand the painting.
